The meeting today between Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and Terengganu Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar received the blessings of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, said the latter’s political secretary, Syahir Sulaiman.

This comes amid speculation on who will become the next Perikatan Nasional chairperson after Muhyiddin resigned on Jan 1.

Syahir said the meeting between Muhyiddin and the PAS vice-president was a casual one, with a formal PN meeting expected to take place soon.

“It was a casual meeting after (Muhyiddin) just returned from the United Kingdom. Samsuri met Muhyiddin on the mandate of ‘tok guru’ (Hadi),” he told Malaysiakini.

The Bachok MP, however, refused to elaborate on whether the meeting was linked to speculation over Samsuri’s candidacy to become the next PN chairperson.

Earlier, Syahir had uploaded a photograph of the meeting, cryptically captioning the Facebook post: “Alhamdulillah, insya-Allah.”

Prominent names being considered

On Dec 2, Hadi indicated that the Islamist party is poised to assume leadership of the opposition coalition, noting that several names, including his own, were being considered to replace Muhyiddin.

However, Hadi admitted he is in poor health, stressing that PAS has a list of other capable leaders for the position, including technocrats.

Among other names floated to take over as PN chief include party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, and Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Nor.

There have also been talks of Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin, who is also the opposition leader, potentially taking over the PN leadership.
